Decorating With Lamps 101

Friday 11 July 2008 @ 4:17 am
How important lamps are to the look and feel of a home can't be overstated. While you may have designed and decorated your rooms with taste and care, you'll find that the lighting will ultimately contribute to how the rooms are perceived by the others.

Choosing the right lamp for your home requires deliberation and knowledge about available options and features. Given the availability of various types of lamps and lighting options such as floor lamps, table lamps, down lighters, recessed lighting, reading lamps, wall lamps, hanging lamps, and chandeliers to name a few, this becomes even more important.

When selecting lamps you have to observe and decide what you need the lamps for. What kind of actions or tasks will be performed in a particular room and what kind of lighting should you provide so the tasks can be successfully completed? Will the room be adequately lighted by the lamp of interest? Do you need to draw attention to a particular design or object? What kind of mood do you want to create? Those are the type of questions you'll have to answer before making a choice.

Generally lamps are used in three ways. They provide light to carry out certain tasks like reading, sewing, and cooking. Usually these type of lamps, which are typically called task lamps, need to be bright. Lamps also provide ambient light to rooms so that people can move and observe objects and other people. Ambient lamps also create a mood for the room. These lamps don't need to be as bright as task lamps. Thirdly lamps can be used to draw attention to, or accent an area or object. These lamps known as accent lamps. But usually, in order to save space, most lamps can be multi-functional and used in all three ways mentioned above.

Options

We will now look at some of the lighting options available.

Floor lamps are great source of ambient light and can double as accent lamps as well. They can also light particular tasks if suitably placed. They come in a huge variety of brands, sizes, and styles. The important thing to consider when selecting a floor lamp is where you want to place it, the kind of light it will provide, and the amount of space it will take up.

Table Lamps have one feature that distinguishes them from other kinds of lamps; they are highly portable. Table lamps can function as task lamps, ambient lamps, and accenting lamps easily. They can also be used to add a touch of decorative flair, even when they are not used. Table lamps are generally adjustable and their shades too can be changed as required.

Hanging paper lanterns while extremely decorative and great on saving space, they may not suit all tastes. However, if you look hard enough and if you are determined enough you may find or create one that will suit the look and feel of your room. They are good for ambient lighting since they do not take up any floor space at all, they are great for places in the house where people congregate.

Wall lamps and conventional hanging lamps can be used for ambient lighting and for accenting. They can come in a great variety of types and can be made to suit any decorative styles you require. They too do not take up any floor space.

Most of the mentioned lamp types as well as those not mentioned can be made into decorative features by changing their shades, brightness, color and size. Lamp shades which can come in various styles ranging from time honored Tiffany to Mica to modern. You can assume these styles by changing their patterns, colors, and materials. Type of bulbs whether they be incandescent, fluorescent, or LED, can also have an effect on the lamps' brightness, color, size and the energy consumption. You should also pay attention to the stands, and brackets in order get the best out of your lamps decoration wise.

In conclusion, when you select lamps you have to take into account your own lighting, decorating, and spatial requirements, and match them with available options to achieve the best results.

Successfully Achieving Your Goals With Visualization

Friday 11 July 2008 @ 3:33 am
Did you know the power to achieve your goals is not in a book or in someone else's hands? You have the power to reach all of your goals, the big ones as well as the small ones. If you can see yourself reaching your goals you can make it a reality. Visualization is a big part of being able to attain any goal! Many people fail to picture themselves reaching their goals and this is what holds them back from being as successful as they could be.

Allow Visualization to Get You There

When you set a goal for yourself do you often envision yourself reaching that goal and then talk yourself out of it? Do you constantly have a negative dialog going in your mind that talks you out of everything that you want to do? Don't allow this to happen. Instead of allowing for these negative thoughts to take over and control your destiny, literally allow yourself to "see" that moment when you reach your goal. You could even picture yourself every step along the way to give yourself greater clarity as to what it is you are trying to do.

If you have a hard time visualizing yourself reaching your goals you don't have to give in and give up, what you need are some tools around you to help create the picture in your mind. Often you need help just visualizing yourself in a calm place along the way when things get stressful, busy, or just a bit too hectic. You can do this by looking at a favorite saying or picture and then making that your reality, even if it is just for a few minutes time. You would be surprised at how simple and effective something like this can be.

If you need help with visualization while you are at your desk or on your computer you may find that it is helpful to download free wallpapers. Downloading wallpapers to your desktop may not sound like something that will help you reach your goals, but when you download an inspirational scene that you can draw strength or relaxation from, you'll find out that this may be exactly what you need! Who knew that visualization aides could be as close as your desktop?

If you want to succeed and to reach the goals that you set for yourself in this life you have to have a plan. Part of this plan is being able to see yourself reaching your goals and being able to visualize yourself in peaceful and constructive settings, even when you aren't in one. If success were easy to attain than none of us would have to set goals, we would just reach them, this means that you'll have to work to become successful but through visualization it can become a reality for you. Visualization can be as easy as a picture, a quote, or even downloading free desktop wallpapers! Surround yourself by all of these tools and make it happen for yourself!

What Are the Benefits of a Student Consolidation Loan

Wednesday 9 July 2008 @ 12:53 pm
If you have successfully managed to get through College and University then you are probably also burdened with a certain level of debt as a result of your studies. Unsurprisingly, the last thing that most students need after they have finished their education is to be faced with a mass of debt repayments, especially as most do not get their ideal job straight away. If this sounds like you then perhaps you should consider a Student Consolidation Loan. These loans are ideal for those students fresh out of education and are worried about meeting the monthly repayments on their loans.

The Federal Consolidation Loan Program was first established in 1986 with the intention of helping students with their financial commitments. In 1999, the original variable rate was replaced with a fixed rate of interest.

Dependent upon each individual's wishes the student can choose to make repayments over a duration of 10 to 20 years. The payments are over a longer period of time than the initial loans but the repayments are more manageable. Students need to also recognize that some of the original loan benefits such as post graduation grace periods are not retained under the loan consolidation program.

Those students you are successful in applying for a consolidation loan will need to fulfill certain criteria.

Any student who has taken federal loans such as a Stafford loan or Federal Perkins loan are eligible to consolidate them so that only one monthly payment needs to be made. However private sector loans are currently not party to the scheme.

The student will need to have a total amount of at least $20,000 in federal loans and cannot have defaulted on any of them. To apply you will need to be in the grace period after the course has finished or have made some repayments. However on a positive note, eligibility does not require that you are employed and a co-signer is not needed to complete the application.

Consolidation loans are perfect if you are struggling to manage the debt repayments and they offer a number of benefits.

Besides the aforementioned reduction in monthly payments and a smaller amount to pay over a longer period of time, the student consolidation loan can actually help to improve your credit rating immediately, rather then years from now.

During college you probably took out Stafford loans that are logged as separate loan agreements. Typically, the average college student will have 6 to 8 loans on file at the time of graduation. One of the key factors in deciding a person's credit rating is the total number of credit agreements they have. Consolidation, therefore can instantly improve the situation.

Besides this, the consolidation loan is great because it is set at a fixed rate, which means that you can be absolutely certain of the amount that you need to repay each month. Currently a consolidation loan cannot be set any higher than 8.25%.

If you are concerned about credit checks when making the application then there is no need to worry. The consolidation loan does not require this and there are a range of flexible payment plans that can be designed to fit around your individual circumstances.

In this respect, you should also consider the option of making repayments via direct debit. This is not obligatory but it can assist in helping you to manage your finances and there is an additional incentive of a 0.25% reduction on the rate of repayment.

The Costs Involved With Repairing Your Roof

Wednesday 9 July 2008 @ 11:07 am
When one is forced to think about the cost of various replacements around the home, frequently one of the things that need to be replaced is the roof. Unfortunately, the cost of replacing one's roof is among some of the most expensive home repair jobs to be done.

On the other hand, there are lots of variables when it comes to repairing or replacing your roof and whether you'll actually need a professional roofing company to get the job done. If you're experiencing multiple leaks in your house from the roof in your home then it may be a good idea to actually call a professional home repair company for a free service quote. Here are some things that one may want to think about, though, when it comes to repairing the roof of a house.

What Goes Into Roof Repair Jobs: First, one should realize that a roofing company or handyman is not just throwing a certain price in the air when asked about replacement or repair costs for a roof, but there are several things included in that quote. Many times a home repair or construction company will include several things when giving out quotes for roof replacements: the material of the roof shingles, how many shingles need to be replaced, a roof cement sealer product, any debris or removal of old shingles that need to be gotten rid of, and of course the labor cost.

For many roofing and home repair companies, they'll have fixed prices for a certain amount of shingles that need to be replaced. For example, if only one or two shingles need to be replaced then they may only charge $150. On the other hand, a small roof replacement job like that can usually be done much cheaper when completed on your own. The only thing that an individual needs to pay for when repairing a couple shingles on the roof is the actual shingles themselves and any sealer that's used.

Leaky Roofing Repair Costs: One issue that often needs to be assessed is whether or not the roof has any leaks in it. A leak in the roof is actually one of the main reasons why many people decide to contact a home repair or construction company in the first place to repair or replace the roof.

However, in order to understand what all goes into repairing a leaky roof, one must first understand what a leaky roof is. A leaky roof on a house usually results from damage or pieces of faulty flashing, and these are pieces of vinyl or metal situated between the roofing shingles and the rest of the house or chimney. When the flashing is damaged or manages to get pulled up then the homeowner experiences leaks in his or her roof.

It is this damage to the flashing material on the roof that is the most expensive, however. Replacing the metal or vinyl flashing for a roof repair job usually costs between $350 and $500. When it comes to completing a roofing job such as this, it is usually best to let an actual construction or home repair company handle the roof repair so that one can be sure that no mistakes are made.

As you can see, the costs of roofing associated with repairs of the roof that are made are typically expensive. If it's not possible that the homeowner can fix the problem by himself, then a construction or roofing company should definitely be contacted. Even though it will be expensive, hiring a roofing company can be just as effective as doing the work yourself, especially if you don't have enough time to complete the job.

You should compare roof cost and metal roof cost through several contractors before making a final decision.

How to Have Great Fun at College

Monday 7 July 2008 @ 12:51 am
Having fun in college can be very easy for some but difficult for others. The world is filled with many different people with many different hobbies. Some find college built for their mindset while others find it frustrating and boring. College can fun for everyone if you think of the ideas that can keep your entertained. I’ll show you a few examples of how to have fun on campus without getting in trouble.

Campus sponsored events – Depending on the campus you’re attending, there’s probably an event going on everyday that you’re not aware of. A good way to see what events are going on is to either check the local bulletin boards, the college website or ask fellow classmates. Sometimes you’ll be amazed at what kind of events the college offers. Who knows? There may be something you love that you can make a ton of friends and have fun at the same time!

Some of the events that you may find yourself attending are block parties, organized sporting leagues, movies, concerts, social clubs, chess clubs, etc. I guarantee that you if you look at the list of events that you’ll find something that will cater your needs.

Join an organization – No matter what college you’re attending, you’ll always find an organization. If you’re not familiar with what n organization is, it’s a group that usually has a focus or cause. Groups like MADD are a perfect example where their group focuses on mothers against drunk driving. If you have a view on something and you want to get with a group that has similar thoughts, an organization may be for you.

Host parties – If you’re renting out a house or you simply know of a big common ground, hosting a party or get together might be one of the best times you’ll ever have. Simply tell your friends and the word will spread very quickly. You can simply put on the invitation that everyone needs to bring their own drinks and food. This way, you’ll only be responsible for your house or the area. Parties don’t always have to include alcoholic drinks; instead you can a fun time without them and just socialize with friends instead.

Think like home – Staying on campus can make some people very home sick. Instead, try and think of what you did while you were at home to keep busy. Did you play a lot of video games? Did you read a lot? Try and pretend that your dorm room and college is your home now where you and your family live. If you can condition yourself to do this, keeping busy and having fun shouldn’t be a problem. Remember, you can’t live with mommy and daddy forever.

As you can see by these few options that college can be a blast if you become motivated and find ways to have fun. Sitting in your dorm all day and being depressed won’t be fun. Just remember that the fun won’t come to you, you’ll have to go out there and find it!

How to Keep Critters Out of the Garden

Sunday 6 July 2008 @ 11:07 pm
This is a timeless struggle between the Gardener and Nature's creatures.

Rabbits, Deer, Chipmunks, Squirrels, Gophers, Moles, Voles and Ground Hogs are probably our biggest challenge in the vegetable and flower garden world. Following are a few easy tips on how to get rid of these pests:

There are all natural repellents such as ShakeAway, Liquid Fence, Deer Away and Critter Ridder. These all-natural repellents all work well and all work in different ways.

Shake Away is a granular Predator Urine product. This is a fantastic product. It creates the scent of predators such as fox, coyote and bobcat. They will not wash away in the rain and do not evaporate. They are not messy or highly stinky, like their liquid counterparts. They even have one for cats.

Liquid Fence Products such as their Mole and Vole repellent are odor and taste based repellents. Mole and Vole is an all-natural liquid that is sprayed and gets down into the soil to coat the roots of plants and earthworms. Their tasty meal is no longer tasty. They simply go elsewhere to look for food. It is long lasting and won't harm vegetation.

Critter Ridder by Havahart comes as a granular or a liquid and is listed OMRI organic. It will repel skunks, ground hogs, squirrels, raccoons, dogs and cats. They are both pepper and capsaicin-based products.

Critter Ridder Deer and Rabbit repel by scent and it lasts up to 3 months. It is also listed OMRI organic.

Havahart also has a line of safe and harmless traps that will allow you to catch unwelcome guests and release them into the wild. Be sure you are not trespassing on someone else’s property.

There are many lines of netting that will act as a barrier between garden critters and your prized vegetable garden, they are somewhat laborious and cumbersome to use, as well as somewhat unsightly if being used on flower gardens, however, they undoubtedly do the job.

The products listed are either all natural or organic and safe. It’s important to choose a product that is not laden with harmful, residual chemicals. We all want our families and pets to be safe. It’ll pay for you to choose your products wisely.

There are a few other items and techniques that also work well. Human hair and dog fur will also work. Human hair works the best. Go to your local Barber Shop and ask for some hair. Yeah, they might look at you a little funny at first, but they will think you are a genius when you tell them what its for. Put it around the perimeter of your garden. This will decompose naturally. It may need to be applied once or twice. With all these products, once a critter knows your garden or flowerbeds are not a safe or tasty place to go they usually will not come back. With a little effort and some product research you will have a pest free garden and be able to enjoy the well deserved results of your labor.

Happy Gardening!

Everything You Need to Know About Destination Wedding

Friday 4 July 2008 @ 4:51 am
A lot of couples will go for the option of a destination wedding nowadays. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is that hosting such a wedding is a lot easier than that in the past. Yet, one thing which has to be stressed is that planning for such a wedding requires extra attention to some details. If you are currently planning for a destination wedding, this article is certainly for you.

As from the name destination wedding, you should know that the first thing you need to think about is the destination of your event. Of course you will most probably choose it according to your own preference and lifestyle. However, there are also some practical issues you have to think about. You need to first of all sort out all legal issues involved. You have to know what kind of documents you will need. There are some wedding planners and travel agents which are specialized in arranging destination weddings. You can try to visit these planners and agents in order to get more information. Of course you can also contact the embassy of your destination so that you can gather all the information you need.

You will also need to think about the weather in the destination. If you would like to have a white wedding, you will not go to countries such as Thailand or Indonesia. Of course these two countries will probably be some of your options if you are planning to have a beach wedding in a warm location. You should also consider the possibility of having adverse weather. It may ruin your whole plan if there is storm on your big day. As a result, you will probably choose a date which is unlikely to have such adverse weather in the destination.

As mentioned, there are some wedding planners which can help you to arrange a destination wedding. If it is possible, you may probably want to hire one. You can think of the following scenario. You have to book the wedding photographer. You will also need to find a baker for you to make your wedding cake. It is indeed not easy for you to arrange all these unless you are in the destination. However, if you hire a wedding planner which specialized in wedding planning in your destination, the planner can help you to arrange all these. You will find your life a lot easier in this case. Of course you may also try to contact some resorts in your destination. Some of these resorts will also provide wedding planning services and in this case the wedding planner will be the resort.

As a matter of fact, there is another main reason for people to have a destination wedding. The couple can have the honeymoon in the same location of the wedding. This can be a perfect option for most couples. This will also help to save some money. However, in this case you will also need to contact some travel agents so that you can plan ahead for your honeymoon.

Botox Side Effects - Should You Worry About Them?

Friday 4 July 2008 @ 1:25 am
Botox injections and treatments are gaining popular through mainstream society these days. Women of all ages now use it to prevent lines, wrinkles and to enhance their appearance, and older women use it to reduce the appearance of wrinkles that may have already formed.

So, what about the negative side effects of Botox? Are there any? Even though botox has gotten some bad publicity over the years, we rarely hear anything about the negative side effects of Botox.

A Little Botox History

Way back in the 1820s, a German physician by the name of Dr. Justinus Kerner set out to find answers to the deaths of German citizens who had consumed sausage. Through is research he learned that of the many that died most had been overtaken by botulism – food poisoning. OK, so that means that one negative side effect to botox is death, although it is very rare and highly unlikely these days, but you should consult a licensed physician before undergoing any procedure.

Continuing his research, Dr. Kerner also distinguished seven different strains of botulinum toxin, naming them strains A through G. But he found that only four strains – A, B, E, and F – are life threatening to humans.

Mid-Century Development

During the mid 1950s and 60s, two other doctors, Drs. Edward J. Schantz and Vernon Brooks experimented further into botulinum toxin , using controversial animal testing techniques that could not be used today because of their cruelty and inaccurate results. Nevertheless, the two doctors found that botulinum toxin type A, despite its risk to humans, was very effective for treating people with crossed eyes and spastic vocal cords. So, ok, something that could potentially kill us can, in small doses, be helpful in relieving muscle spasms of all kinds.

The Birth of Botox

The Year is 1989, and the FDA approved botulinum toxin type A for treatment of crossed eyes and eye muscle spasms. Through a miracle of marketing genius, the botulism poison that had once killed German sausage eaters was renamed "Botox” and treatments took off like wildfire. Through further experimentation it was found that Botox also temporarily cured excessive sweating and some symptoms of cerebral palsy. After the botox treatments, patients were monitored closely for any negative side effects of Botox treatments.

A breakthrough in keeping us looking younger was on the horizon. In the 1990s, Dr. Jean Carruthers noticed that many of the patients being treated with Botox were surprisingly wrinkle-free. Using this information, Dr. Carruthers and her husband, a dermatologist, conducted various clinical studies that confirmed the ability of Botox to reduce frown lines and wrinkles on the human face.

Botox Now

Today, Botox is so widely accepted that you can go to a botox party and have your lips injected right on the spot. The fear of negative side effects is almost none existent. So much so that Botox Sales in 2006 exceeded $1 billion. Starting out as a deadly poison killer Botox has quickly transformed itself into a successful cosmetic treatment that helps millions of people look younger everyday.

Botox also remains a staple for non-cosmetic treatments, like reducing muscle spasms in cerebral palsy patients, uncrossing eyes, and relieving patients of embarrassing facial twitches and spasms. Botox treatments are not permanent and must be repeated every three to six months. Most patients are so pleased with the results that they ave no problem returning to the doctor regularly for scheduled treatments. The early fears of botox no longer prevail and although there are a low number of cases each year that result from negative side effects of botox, it is clear that botox is here to stay.

What If…Enough Wasn’t Good Enough?

Wednesday 2 July 2008 @ 5:46 am
The other day a client emailed me with an update and ended with “So thanks for the crappy assignment. It was great.”

The comment reminded me of the several hundred individual conversations I’d had at a festival just the weekend before. I was asking people “What If…You Could Love Your Life Even MORE?” Most of them talked about how their life was already pretty good, how they were mostly happy with work and how they had “enough” fun in life. A few talked about how some things could have some room for improvement, a few talked about how they were already having an amazing life and a select few were more than ready for change.

When pressed to answer the question about loving life even more though, the reaction almost across the board was “Oh no, I couldn’t possibly do that.” What I discovered, rather resoundingly, in these conversations was that for the most part people were scared of actually asking for and getting more of what they really wanted. While they loved the actual idea of Do What You Love, Love What You Do, the reality of what that might mean in their lives felt a little overwhelming. A frequent answer to the question was “I’d probably get in trouble!”

“But what if you could AND you wouldn’t get in trouble?” I kept asking. That seemed to make all the difference with those I was talking to. My client had been having a similar problem. Before even coming to work with me she’d already made some amazing strides at changing her life…but she was still afraid and still holding back. So I shared with her this little tidbit called Beckhard’s Change Formula. It goes like this:

D x V x FS >R

D = Dissatisfaction with Status Quo
V = Vision
FS = First Steps
R = Resistance to Change

The formula talks about what drives change. If you remember your algebra you’ll know that if any one, or any combination, of the elements on the left of the formula is big enough it will overcome the resistance to change (a normal human response pattern.) With my client, she already had the vision and a good set of first steps but she still wasn’t uncomfortable enough with the status quo of her life. So to get her uncomfortable enough to change I asked her to “do nothing” for 3 days. That was her crappy assignment. In fact it was so crappy that she couldn’t even complete it. She got so incredibly uncomfortable with the reality of staying exactly where she was that about

Harp is Not Just a Musical Instrument

Wednesday 2 July 2008 @ 2:52 am
I’m really good at harping. And I’m not talking about the musical instrument. I may not have the foggiest idea how to strum a harp, but I sure am good at the other kind. Just ask my son.

Sometimes it starts before he even gets out of bed: “Let’s go…time to get up. Come on! Are you getting up, or what? Quit being lazy. I told you not to go to bed so late last night.”

And so I’ve set the course for the day. As soon as he’s out of the shower, I start in: “Did you pick up your clothes off the floor? What about your towel? Are you sure you got all of your homework done? Why didn’t you tell me you wanted hot lunch today? I already made you a lunch.” Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…

No wonder my son all but races out of the house in the morning.

Harping has become a familiar tune in our house. One that doesn’t emit beautiful music and one I’m not particularly proud of. It’s not that I enjoy getting after my kids about stuff; I just can’t seem to help myself. Whether out of habit or a subconscious “control-freak” thing I have going on, harping is something I’ve been trying to get a rein on. I’m afraid that if it keeps on, I will, indeed, drive my children to “exasperation,” as the Bible warns in Ephesians 6:4. If you’re like me and struggle with this musical disaster, consider the following ways to keep harping at bay in your home.

• Pray. This may seem like a no-brainer but there are many of us who bypass this crucial step. I love the Message version of Mark 11:22. It says, “That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large.” Somewhere in between small and large lies our issue of harping on our kids.

• Make a decision. Every morning, decide that harping will be kept to a minimum. Your kids are bound to do things that push your harp button. But deciding not to allow the devil to use those buttons to get you going is the key to breaking this ugly habit.

• Come up with a better plan. You know by now that all of your pestering and getting after your kids is not very effective. Take inventory of those things your children do that require some extra attention and come up with a plan of action. If one of the problem areas is leaving towels on the bathroom floor after showering, try leaving the towel on the floor and removing all other towels from the bathroom. The next morning, the only available towel will be the one left on the floor in a heap. Using a dirty, damp towel might be just what she needs to get the message.

• Tongue biting really works! Before those words start rolling off your tongue, bite it. Besides preventing you from launching into your favorite harp melody, the pain will give you something else to focus on.

Kids certainly need direction. Harping on them may seem to be the easiest way to do that but it has been proven to be ineffective. Also, as the Bible warns, it turns kids’ hearts away from their parents and drives them to anger. Today, won’t you join me in deciding to come up with a way to decrease the amount of harping we do so we can keep the harmony in our homes?
